Eurovision Song Contest

Britain came bottom and we complain that political voting spoils the event. No, there are several things going on here. One: Britain and Western Europe can no longer get away with third rate acts and hope the rest of Europe falls into line. Two: Europe is moving eastwards fast, and it's us that needs to fall into line. Too long has Britain looked to the US with our back facing the east; now it's time to turn around. Three: There's a rising sense of nationhood and belonging in the east, even amongst old enemies; Britain needs to join in and reach out a hand in community and friendship. Four: and yes, maybe we should encourage four national songs for our four UK nations - one of them might be a winner.
