Goals & Policy Detail - Democracy
BACK TO MAIN GOALS & POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We want our say on issues that affect us and we expect government to
listen.
What's wrong with things as they are?
British democracy
is gradually being eroded
The government
is not asking the people and is certainly not listening
Small numbers
of activists and even individuals can determine government policy affecting
the whole country
Policies and
laws are made based on party dogma rather than benefit to Britain and
the British people
The House
of Lords needs reforming
UKpopdems will make sure that the democratic will of the people prevails,
so we'll:
Publish all
policies in advance of elections
Ensure any
new policies required in government are tested by the will of the people
first
Take bills
rejected twice by the Lords straight to the people
Encourage
and support interest groups of between 2 and 5 million people each to
recommend introduction of new bills, change or abolish existing laws
and generally have their say
Ask the people
to determine policy on social issues that affect them such as: violence
in the media, sex in the media, political correctness and equality.
Make the majority
of the House of Lords elected and non-party
What will this do for the British People?
You will
know that Britain's democracy will be safeguarded and enhanced
You will see
the power of ordinary people increase
You will know
exactly what policies are being put forward before elections are held
You will know
that the government is obliged to listen to you
Companion notes to the policy
Peoples'
votes will be decided on a simple majority
Interest Groups
fully supported by dedicated civil servants, and of a size to make an
impact but not dominate. Bills will be introduced on 2 - 3 million vote
petitions, and then voted on by the people first.
On social
issue votes; the government will stay neutral, maximise information
available and ensure separation of fact from opinion.
The second
chamber should be strong and independent of party. Electoral options
for the upper house need consensus.
