Goals & Policy Detail - Poverty
and Aid
BACK
TO MAIN GOALS & POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We are a compassionate nation and want to directly help those suffering
poverty, fear and natural disasters.
What's wrong with things as they are?
The corruption,
greed and conflict that are the main causes of poverty and fear are
not being addressed seriously
Millions in
aid is being diverted by dictators and corrupt governments instead of
going to people in need
Action to
support suffering people in the case of natural disasters and conflicts
is often taken too late or mired in procedure
UKpopdems will make sure that people who are suffering are helped
quickly and directly, so we'll:
Set up a
large, permanent, multi-agency, British rapid reaction force and work
with our allies to make it international and cooperative
Work with
the EU to specifically address African problems where Europe has the
main historic responsibility
Work with
British and international NGOs to make sure aid goes directly to people
in need
Help as many
refugees and asylum seekers as we can and set up camps where individuals
and families can be protected
What will this do for the British People?
Britain will
be ready to act immediately in strength and depth, alone or with our
allies, when natural disasters occur
People in
need of aid will increasingly get that aid directly rather than through
their governments
A specific
plan for African problems will be developed and put into action
Camps will
be set up in Britain and abroad for asylum seekers and refugees so they
can be properly looked after until it is safe for them to return
Companion notes to the policy
When disaster
strikes, Britain must have the strength to act well on its own, if necessary,
and in conjunction with local and international charities. We see a
strong, disciplined, multi-skilled force in Britain, ready to go.
We already
know the likely areas that will need help at some point. Britain can
work independently and with our allies to ease the way beforehand with
those states affected.
In Africa,
particularly, determined action is essential. Europe is historically
responsible for Africa's problems today and has the ability to help
solve them. We will push for joint and rapid European action.
Increasingly,
Britain's aid will go directly to those who need it, rather than governments.
Where aid is given to governments, we will need to see proof that at
least 80% reaches individuals who need it.
Asylum seekers
need to be protected and nurtured above all, not abandoned to their
own devices. Health, education, sustenance and social support are basic
necessities that need providing until conditions are safe for return.
