Goals & Policy Detail - The
Monarchy and Honours
BACK TO MAIN GOALS &
POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We want to see what value the Monarchy brings and the honours system
reformed
What's wrong with things as they are?
Many people
feel the Monarch and Royal Family do not add value to Britain and costs
too much
The constitutional
and historic importance of Britain's monarchy is not well understood
The Monarch
and heirs seem badly advised and supported
The honours
system is falling into disrepute.
Honours are
being issued to time servers, political donators and favoured big business
rather than those who really deserve them
UKpopdems will make sure that the Monarch plays a key role in protecting
Britain's democracy and preventing politicians' abuse of power, so we'll:
Ensure pupils
are taught in detail about Britain's head of state. the Monarch, parliament
and democracy
Bring the
monarch closer to the people through new roles requiring independent
examination.
Make the net
costs of the British Monarch against other countries' heads of state
visible to the people
Form a new
Privy Council, which will include public representation, to advise the
Monarch
Form a new
honours system of Queen's Awards and Queen's Medals under the control
of the Monarch and Privy Council. The Queen's Award rewarding service
and the Queen's Medal recognising achievement.
Strengthen
the peerage and resultant House of Lords by defining minimum age, experience
and receipt of prior honours.
What will this do for the British People?
Everyone
will understand the value of Monarchy in protecting Britain's democracy
You will know
the net cost of the British Monarchy and how this compares with the
cost of our parliament, and Monarchies and Presidencies of other countries
You will see
the Monarch directly involved in new independent roles, such as inquiries,
and better linked to the people through the Privy Council and interest
groups.
You will observe
that the new Queen's Award and Medal are awarded to those who really
deserve them, and that peerages are awarded to the best and most able
men and women.
Companion notes to the policy
In schools,
pupils will learn about Britain's Monarch and democracy in the Civilisation
curriculum
In Britain's
constitution, the Monarch provides true independence. Inquiries, particularly,
need this independence and so will be initiated and conducted under
royal and judicial control.
Peoples' representatives
to the Privy Council will be by popular vote.
The selling
and awarding of honours for cash, favours and the courting of popular
opinion is a terrible scandal and must be stopped. In future, honours
will be decided under control of the Monarch and new Privy Council.
Then, under normal circumstances, a Knighthood could only be given conditional
upon, and some years after, receipt of a Queen's Medal or Award. Likewise
a peerage after some years as a Knight.
