Goals & Policy Detail - Crime
BACK TO MAIN GOALS &
POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We want to feel safe in the streets and going about our everyday lives.
What's wrong with things as they are?
Crime generally,
and violent crime in particular, is escalating and seems out of control.
There are
very low rates of detection and prosecution
Penalties
for quite serious crimes seem derisory
Not enough
police are on the streets
Onerous and
duplicate paperwork requirements wastes police time
There is nervousness
about increasing numbers of police being armed
Too many serious
criminals are in the community when they should be in prison
Criminals
seem to get more help and protection than their victims
UKpopdems will make sure that offenders, especially violent offenders,
are caught and punished, so we'll:
Massively
increase policing on the streets through the recruitment of at least
250,000 community officers.
Measure community
officers on knowledge of the local community in order to reduce and
detect crime and coordinate support for those in need.
Make imprisonment
the standard punishment for all crimes involving violence, violent aggression
and wanton criminal damage.
Make sure
the prison sentence given is at least the time served. Quickly build
and staff more prisons to match.
Reform the
prison service to focus prisoners' minds on work, self-discipline, education
and rehabilitation.
Deport foreign
nationals after they have served jail sentences.
Outlaw most
knives and all weapons. Ban toy weapons capable of firing projectiles.
Increase the
use of police technology to detect more crimes and reduce paperwork.
Disarm the
police and restrict arms to response units where there is a real identifiable
danger to life.
Increase victim
support through specialist teams and community officers.
Encourage
and empower local communities to involve themselves in reducing crime.
What will this do for the British People?
You will
find that more criminals are detected and punished
You will be
comforted by an increase in visible police presence on the streets
You will feel
safer because violent and aggressive offenders will be removed from
society.
If you are
a victim, potential victim or anyone needing support you will get the
help you need
Companion notes to the policy
Community
officers are an extended role for the successful existing PCSO model.
250,000 sounds a huge number but it's the minimum necessary to get crime
back under control.
Community
Officer staffing levels will come from relocating public servants, unemployed,
disabled and other channels.
Jail terms
to be imposed for large-scale individual and corporate fraud and all
crimes of violence and 'invasion' -rape, burglary, mugging etc.
Every County,
District and Metropolitan area to allocate land for prisons
Knives not
banned will be licensed if carried in public
Police armed
for terrorist duties to be out of sight. Armed British police frighten
people, not re-assure them. There have been too many mistakes where
innocent lives have been lost.
