Goals & Policy Detail - Immigration

BACK TO MAIN GOALS & POLICY DETAIL

This is what you say:

We accept Britain needs immigration, but we want it reduced and controlled.

What's wrong with things as they are?

Immigration is too high and seemingly out of control
Immigrants, asylum seekers and foreign workers easily get lost in the system
Absorption into society is not being managed, creating ghettos in some places and racial tension in others
Lack of control means many foreigners are being abused in Britain and it shames us
Becoming a British citizen should be much more testing
Our borders are too easily breached by illegal immigrants, international criminals, traffickers and others intent on doing Britain harm

UKpopdems will make sure that immigration and the influx of foreign workers matches Britain's needs, so we'll:

Introduce easily obtained and changeable temporary tourist, work and student visas and permits for all foreign nationals
Increase front-line customs resources and technology to monitor entry conditions and detect criminal intent
Ensure foreign workers are supported by their employers for at least shelter and health, and tourists and students possess E111 or health insurance.
As the number of community officers increase, gradually identify illegal and unregistered foreign nationals and register them. Detain serious breaches before deportation.
Introduce national registrations for foreigners from employers, schools, colleges and places of temporary residence
Welcome genuine asylum seekers but manage absorption into society determined by local communities
Match short and long term immigration to Britain's needs
Agree with the British people a tougher route to becoming a new British citizen

What will this do for the British People?

You will feel assured that immigration and asylum will be managed properly and have more local control over absorption
Foreign nationals lost in the system will be detected
Increased front-line resources and technology will reduce illegal entrants, international crime, trafficking and abuse
You will determine the process for new British nationality
Foreign workers will be better protected and supported

Companion notes to the policy

'Easy visas' and 'easy permits' are simple card systems to aid tracking and identification. This will be linked to a simple computer system for checking by police, employers, customs, revenue, hospitals etc. Changes can be made at post offices and other government offices.
Foreign nationals looking for work in the UK will need to show they can support themselves for at least three months to avoid overloading social and health services. This will include EU residents.
Those seeking asylum in the UK will be cared for in camps rather than being lost and unsupported in the community. After successful processing, any absorption into society will depend on local support being available.
Employers of foreign workers will normally be obliged to retain them for at least two years and provide social support. National minimum wage rules will apply.
When employing foreign nationals on short term projects, employers will additionally have to ensure repatriation
