Goals & Policy Detail - Defence
and Foreign Policy
BACK TO MAIN GOALS & POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We want a safer, freer and more compassionate world.
What's wrong with things as they are?
Many people
live in fear of their own governments, and the world generally is becoming
more dangerous and unstable
Britain's
defence capability is being reduced to the level where we cannot properly
defend ourselves and others
Our forces
are poorly equipped and the procurement process is damagingly long,
inefficient and expensive
The United
Nations peacekeeping role cannot be trusted to react quickly enough
to protect people in danger
Our borders
are too porous and need better protecting
UKpopdems will make sure Britain has strong defences that protect
our country and those across the globe who are in danger, so we'll:
At least
double front-line resources and bring back famous and historic regiments
where this has public support
Properly look
after our front-line forces in recognition of the danger they willingly
put themselves into
Invest in
the best equipment from home and abroad
Boost our
defence industry where Britain can excel, otherwise source through 'unrestricted
use' partnerships abroad
Work to build
a rapid reaction peacekeeping force pre-approved by the UN to act
Unless Britain
is directly threatened, sanction no wars without reference to the British
people
Boost intelligence
services further to protect Britain from terrorists, international criminals,
drug and people traffickers.
Be in the
forefront of diplomatic efforts to resolve international disputes, especially
where Britain's expertise can be of value.
Be prepared
to negotiate with anyone, anywhere in order to preserve world peace.
What will this do for the British People?
You will
be re-assured that Britain is able to protect itself and others in need
across the world
Other than
peacekeeping obligations, you will know that Britain will not go to
war without your approval unless we are directly threatened
Our historical
strengths in diplomacy will be in the fore-front of the resolution of
difficult issues
Intelligence
services will be strengthened to meet new threats
Companion notes to the policy
Front-line
troops of low rank are badly paid and badly looked after. Pay and support
will improve more for these ranks.
Defence procurement
costs will be contained through more 'off-the-peg' solutions and better
linking of actual users to contractors. Equipment bought overseas will
be part-manufactured and serviced in Britain.
Pre-approved
peacekeeping for Africa is especially needed. Joint European/African
force preferred.
