Goals & Policy Detail - Transport
BACK TO MAIN GOALS &
POLICY DETAIL
This is what you say:
We want the right options to meet our needs for safe, fast, reliable
and clean travel at fair cost.
What's wrong with things as they are?
Transport
policy is failing both drivers and public transport users
Traffic congestion
is worsening, harming business and the environment
Motorists
pay very high taxes but appear to get little investment in return
There is a
feeling that motorists are being persecuted
Except in
some limited areas, public transport is not good enough
UKpopdems will make sure that transport options meet Britain's
needs, so we'll:
Stop persecuting
drivers but enforce safe driving.
Review all
speed limits so they are simple, common sense, modern and understandable.
Strictly enforce them.
Ask the people
to decide on increasing or removing static speed cameras and how fines
are used.
Recognise
the inherent safety and cleanliness of motorways and dual carriageways.
Gradually expand the motorway network to get drivers away from more
dangerous and polluting country and town roads
Find ways
to relieve congestion in the short term
Incorporate
road tax into petrol taxes and discontinue the tax disc to produce a
fairer system based on efficient fuel usage. Keep overall taxes the
same
Introduce
a bar coded insurance disc that can be easily checked to reduce the
number of uninsured vehicles
Support toughening
international standards for cleaner, quieter and safer transport.
Invest in
public transport and grow passenger numbers, especially on buses.
Begin to ring
fence motoring taxes so that 50% is spent on roads, 15% on public transport,
15% on emergency services and 20% on environmental improvement.
What will this do for the British People?
You will be
listened to on motoring issues and you'll know where your tax money
is going
Roads will
gradually become safer and better flowing
Motoring taxes
will become fairer and tax and insurance evasion reduced
Speed limits
will become simpler and more commonsense.
Public transport
will become an easier option
Companion notes to the policy
Motor transport
is essential for Britain, but vehicles are lethal weapons in the wrong
hands. This needs reflecting in policy
The speed
limit review will be fast and based on village, town and city boundaries
and how well traffic is separated from pedestrians and each other.
Road tax incorporation
into petrol taxes will allow motorists to control their own road costs
through efficient driving. It also means that foreign vehicles pay their
share and the elimination of tax fraud and collection costs.
Technology
will allow insurance discs to be verified on-line by those authorised
In order to
increase public transport usage, especially of buses, we want to drive
down prices and drive up convenience. More and better marketed rural
services connecting villages to towns, perhaps free at the point of
use.
Ring fencing
of taxes and votes on raising or reducing taxes will be an increasing
trend of UKpopdem government.
